In 1972, the residents of McKinleyville asked the District to help collect street light charges on the District's water bill.  The Board agreed in concept to the proposal but determined that all the voters would need to approve this activity before the District could become involved.  In June 1972, the voters of McKinleyville approved and agreed by a 66% margin to activate street lighting authority.

Today, the District serves as a collection agent for slightly over 2000  customers that live within 95+ street light zones.  Additionally, the District pays for lighting along portions of Central Avenue.  The District collects monthly charges ranging from $.47 to $10.73 per month to cover maintenance and energy costs, debt service for the purchase of street lights, and replacement reserve.
