GRANT AWARDS:

Park Bench at Norton Creek Wildlife Area - We received grant funding in the amount of $475 from the McKinleyville Area Fund to place a park bench overlooking the pond at Norton Creek Wildlife Area.  The grant will cover the cost to purchase the 100% recycled plastic park bench and also cover the cost for labor and materials for installation.

Concerts in the Park - We received grant funding in the amount of $250 from the McKinleyville Area Fund to help pay for sound system rentals for the 2008 Concerts in the Park series.  The 2008 Summer Concert Series is co-sponsored by the McKinleyville Senior Center and will be held at Pierson Park.

Youth Fee Reduction Fund - We received grant funding in the amount of $2,500 from Humboldt Sponsors to help support the Youth Fee Reduction Fund.  This fund provides a 25% to 50% discount to low-income families in McKinleyville who could not otherwise afford to participate in our recreation programs.

VACATION:

I am getting married and will be on vacation from April 11 through April 18, 2008, and therefore will be absent from the April 16, 2008 MCSD meeting.

HILLER SPORTS COMPLEX SOCCER FIELDS:

We have made great progress the last several days with the soccer field construction.  Miller Farms dug all the trenches and staff has installed much of the irrigation pipe.  Pipe installation will continue and should be completed by Friday, April 11, 2008.

After the irrigation is installed, Miller Farms will install the sprinkler heads, finish grading, harrow the fields and hydro-seed.  With any luck, this should all be completed by the end of April.

HUMBOLDT HOOPS YOUTH 3 on 3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:

Our 3rd Annual Humboldt Hoops Youth 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was a great success.  More than thirty (30) teams brought about one hundred fifty boys and girls, ages 8 to 13 from all over Humboldt County to enjoy this event.  We had teams from Fortuna, Ferndale, Weaverville, Trinidad, McKinleyville, Arcata, and Eureka.

Our preliminary budget estimates approximately $1,000 net contribution for the Youth Fee Reduction Fund.

WORK EXPERIENCE/COMMUNITY SERVICE

I have been working with the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services to provide their clients with work experience.  We have hired a clerical position to work in the Parks & Recreation Office Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 12:00 noon.  We have also hired three (3) Park Maintenance Positions, each working 32 hours per week.

Each client will work a minimum of 6 months and Humboldt County pays 100% of his or her wages.  In addition, the County picks up any potential Workers Compensation Claims.

COMMUNITY SERVICE WORKERS:

Our Parks staff continues to utilize the Community Service Worker (CSW) program daily.  This program helps us to maintain Pierson Park, Hiller Park, Hiller Sports Complex, Azalea Hall, the McKinleyville Activity Center, and several of our Open Space Maintenance Zones.

SWAP PROGRAM:

Our Park Maintenance Staff has been working with the SWAP program on the first Saturday of each month in order to improve the look of Central Avenue landscaping.
